Why Are People Still Moving to Florida While Others Are Looking to Leave?

November 28, 20244 min read

Moving to Florida is a dream for many, and in 2024, it's still one of the hottest destinations in the U.S. However, while some people are eagerly packing their bags for the Sunshine State, others are leaving and not looking back. So, what’s really going on? Is living in Florida still the dream life it’s often made out to be, or is there more to the story?

I recently ran Instagram polls to get firsthand insights from people who have moved here or are considering it, as well as those who have left. Here are the top five reasons people are still moving to Florida and the top five reasons others are leaving.

🌴 Top 5 Reasons People Are Moving to Florida

1. Work-from-Home Opportunities & Job Transfers

Many companies have relocated to Florida post-2020, attracting employees looking for a better quality of life. Remote work has also played a huge role, with some clients living in Florida part-time while maintaining jobs in states like New York or New Jersey. This flexibility allows them to enjoy Florida’s benefits while keeping their northern roots.

2. The Weather

Let’s face it: Florida’s warm climate is a major draw. After enduring long, cold winters, many people dream of year-round sunshine. While the weather wasn’t my deciding factor, many poll respondents cited it as a top reason for their move. The consistent sunshine and warmth contribute to better moods and more outdoor activities.

3. Better Quality of Life

For many, Florida offers an improved quality of life. Sunshine, beaches, and outdoor activities boost overall well-being. Studies show that even looking at water can improve your mood, and in Florida, you’re never far from a beach or a lake. Seasonal depression is virtually nonexistent here.

4. Lower Cost of Living (Compared to Some States)

While Florida's cost of living has increased, it's still a bargain compared to states like California, New York, and New Jersey. Many people find that even with slightly lower salaries, their overall quality of life improves due to lower taxes and cheaper housing.

5. Second Homes & Investment Opportunities

Florida is a prime destination for vacation homes and investment properties. Many buyers purchase second homes or condos to rent out on Airbnb or simply use as vacation getaways. Florida’s status as a tourist hotspot ensures a robust market for rental properties.

🚗 Top 5 Reasons People Are Leaving Florida

1. Desire for More Nature & Open Space

Florida, especially South Florida, is densely developed. Many people miss the open spaces and natural beauty found in states like Colorado. Florida's flat landscape and urban sprawl can feel limiting compared to the mountains and open plains elsewhere.

2. Overpopulation

Florida’s population has boomed, adding around 1,000 new residents daily in 2023. This growth leads to congestion, stress, and increased traffic, particularly in metro areas like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. Long-time residents often feel the state has become too crowded.

3. Rising Cost of Living

While Florida is cheaper than some states, its cost of living has soared, particularly for natives. Homes that once sold for $200,000 now go for $700,000. Wages haven’t kept pace with these increases, and insurance costs have spiked dramatically. Some residents are moving to places like Tennessee and Georgia, where they can find more affordable housing.

4. Hurricanes & Natural Disasters

The threat of hurricanes is a significant downside. After experiencing back-to-back storms, some people have had enough of the damage, preparation, and insurance headaches. Even routine storms can cause flooding, adding to the stress.

5. The Grass Isn’t Always Greener

Many people who moved to Florida post-2020 did so impulsively, lured by the state’s freedom and open policies. However, they discovered that life in Florida isn’t a permanent vacation. Some who didn’t do thorough research found that it wasn’t the paradise they envisioned and decided to return home.
